Returning to Safety: Understanding Your Nervous System & Why It Matters

In today’s world, many of us are living in a constant state of doing, reacting, and pushing through.
We wake up already thinking.
We move through our day carrying stress.
We fall asleep still holding tension in the body.
And over time, this becomes our normal.
But what most people don’t realize is—this isn’t just mental.
It’s your nervous system.
The Nervous System: Your Internal Safety System
Your nervous system is always scanning your environment, asking one core question:
Am I safe?
Based on that answer, your body shifts into different states.
Sympathetic State (Fight or Flight)
This is the state most people are living in daily.
It’s not just for emergencies anymore—it’s become a lifestyle.
In this state, you may feel:
anxious or on edge
overwhelmed or reactive
mentally busy or overthinking
tension in the body (jaw, shoulders, stomach)
Your body is preparing for action.
Your heart rate increases.
Your system is on alert.
This state isn’t wrong—it’s protective.
But when we stay here too long, the body never gets a chance to reset.
Parasympathetic State (Rest, Restore & Regulate)
This is where healing happens.
More specifically, we’re talking about the ventral vagal state—a regulated state where the body feels safe enough to:
relax
digest
connect with others
process emotions
repair and heal
In this state, you feel:
grounded
present
open
connected
Your body is no longer in survival.
It’s in restoration.
Why This Matters More Than You Think
You cannot force healing in a body that feels unsafe.
You cannot access your intuition clearly when your system is overwhelmed.
You cannot fully receive energy work if your nervous system is still in protection mode.
This is why so many people:
try to “do the work” but don’t feel lasting change
struggle to relax even during rest
feel disconnected from themselves
It’s not because they’re doing it wrong. It’s because their nervous system hasn’t been guided back to safety.

The work is not to eliminate activation. The work is to move through it.
